Why We Use Securus Technologies to Keep Drugs Out Of Prison

One of the things that my team of corrections officers has to do on a daily basis is work to keep drugs from getting into the hands of the inmates. These inmates are dangerous enough without having to feel invincible under the influence. Not only are me and my officers in danger, but so are other inmates staff, and even the visitors. That is why we spend so much time each day trying to keep the drugs out of the hands of these inmates.

Securus Technologies is a company we trust because they are responsible for setting up the inmate call monitoring systems in over 2,600 prisons all around this country. The CEO, Richard Smith, says that his entire Dallas-based team of employees share the same dedication to making the world safer for us all. When you have a team behind you like that, you can accomplish big things in the jail. Our goal was to not only identify the sources of the drugs in our jail, but to clamp them down and stop this issue once and for all.

Soon after my team was taught how the LBS software worked, we set up the alerts to notify us if any chatter was talking place concerning drugs. What we discovered was that almost instantly, the call monitoring system was able to identify conversations by inmates talking about drugs in various degrees.

We heard one inmate tell his brother the way drugs were smuggled into the jail. We learned about one inmate who was selling his prescription drugs to feed a heroin addiction. We were even able to discover how one inmate was hiding his drugs inside the cell right under our noses. The Securus Technologies system has been key in helping us to really make the entire prison safer for each of us.

OSI Group Makes Great Strides In Energy Usage Reduction

The OSI Group has been doing amazing things with energy – by using a lot less of it.

Earlier this year, OSI Group achieved a remarkable milestone. The company reduced its energy consumption by 20 million kWh since a project to trim energy usage began in June 2013.

As one of the world’s largest meat processing companies with 65 facilities operating in 17 countries around the world, OSI facilities are naturally energy intensive. But that doesn’t mean each plant can’t be sustainable and reduce their collective carbon footprint as much as possible.

In 2013 OSI partnered with Cascade Energy on an effort to reduce the amount of energy used by refrigeration units at the OSI Oakland, Iowa, plant. The result was a cut in energy usage by 10 million kWh. The success of the Oakland experiment led to duplicating the effort in four more facilities, including OSI Chicago-Racine, OSI West Chicago, OSI Geneva in Illinois and OSI West Jordan in Utah.

The result was a total of 20 million kWh saved in three-and-a-half years. That’s the equivalent electricity use for 1,850 homes for a full year. Saving 20 million kWh also prevents the release of 4,056 metric tons of carbon emissions (greenhouse gasses) into the environment. It could also be compared to the equivalent of keeping 2,969 passenger cars off the roads for twelve months.

Sustainability and environmentally friendly operation has become a core value of the OSI Group. To this end, the company has been moving aggressively to adopt pollution-free and renewable energy sources, especially wind and solar-generated power.

Additionally, OSI has been outfitting its processing plants with water-reduction faucets, installing better insulation to conserve energy and adopting sustainable materials when building new plants or remodeling existing structures.

OSI Group prides itself as being among the most environmentally sustainable business operations in the world.
